The sun was rising over LA as Quinn stood in front of the planning boards in Miloâs study. Heâd outlined his life for the next fifteen years. Something that her parents would have been impressed by. And it was impressiveâand daunting.
Heâd said that heâd worked out a plan for them. But her name was nowhere on any of the lists. So, where did she fit? And did she really want everything planned out? Controlled?
Sheâd lived like that for years. Plans and schedules were one of the things sheâd left behind when sheâd fled her parentsâ home. Quinn only planned for her current job and one follow-on assignment. There had been a few times when she hadnât known what was going to happen, yet sheâd found that life generally worked out. But she knew Milo needed these.
Lifting the mug of coffee to her lips, she took a deep breath and tried to reorient her mind. Sheâd spent the night in Miloâs bed, though they hadnât slept much. Her body tingled as she remembered the feel of Miloâs fingers on her skin. His kisses trailing along her belly. Last night had been lovely. So why was she standing in his study before dawn, unable to quiet the chatter in her mind?
Rolling her neck, Quinn let out a sigh. Milo planned. He thought things through. And he followed through with his plans, no matter what. When heâd decided to resign from the Oceanside Clinic, nothing she or his mom had said had mattered. He was determined.
It was one of the things Quinn loved about him. The word had floated around her last night as heâd held her. Quinn loved Milo. Loved his thoughtfulness, his open heart, his determined spirit. When had her love shifted from that of a cherished friend to romantic?
Did it matter?
Milo had wanted herâhad said heâd wanted her for years. But what if she failed to fit into his plans like sheâd failed to fit into her parentsâ?
Her knees trembled. No. Milo was not her parents, and she was not going to imagine the end of this relationship before it even began.
She wasnât.
Quinn forced herself to walk into the kitchen. Placing the mug on the counter, she moved to grab the coffeepot. She poured the coffee then turned to rinse out the pot. Yawning, she reached for her mug, but her fingers didnât quite catch it. The cup tumbled to the floor and she let out a cry. The ceramic shattered at her feet, the sound echoing through the room.
Heat raced along her toes as coffee splashed. âShoot!â She hopped onto the counter. The coffee spreading across the tiles, clinging to the previously perfect grout.
âIn his apartment for less than twenty-four hours and already destroying stuff.â Quinn sighed. Somewhere her motherâs ghost was saying, Told you so...
âI donât care about a mug, Quinn.â Milo spoke from the doorway. He wore only boxers, and he looked from the floor to where she was perched on the counter. âAre you okay?â
âBurned my toes, but otherwise fine.
